Dear ROAV Member(s),

Well, now you’ve gone and done it: not only have you gone and gotten one of the finest vehicles on the planet, now you have joined the oldest Rover club in North America.

Now, I should point out at this juncture, that the club does cover both the “Rover” and the “Land Rover” marks.  We do have several members with the former mark, but we can’t seem to get them to take them out on the trails … however, most also own Land Rovers, so they can drive in all conditions.

The club has a very robust and active membership, spanning novice Land Rover owners to hard core off-roaders.  You know the type of the former – clean Discovery/LR3/Range Rover owner, even cleaner under carriage, sporting factory brush guard and awfully shinny auxiliary lights, and running boards.  Well, the guard will get bent the first tree kissed, the lights are good (probably need bigger ones), the running boards will be unbolted by another helpful club member at the start of your first trail, and the undercarriage will never be clean again.

So, regardless of where you sit in this spectrum, this club is for you.  The novice will never be left stuck and unattended; there are “stock” trails on most events where there is a good chance that you can get through without any dings or dents.  For the experienced off-roaders, there is a plethora of members who have done it better, got stuck for longer or, more importantly - done it with more style!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Rover Owners Association of Virginia. This year marks the 32nd anniversary of our club and the 15th Mid Atlantic Rally (MAR).  Few of the charter members expected it to go this far and get this big. They started with just a few phone calls to get together to figure out a way to get the cars to stop leaking and to start running.

So what to do from here:

1.                   Go to the web site – it has a new look and feel, and we are aiming to keep it current and fresh with up to date information on club activities and events:  www.roav.org

2.                   Join the forum – this is where the real day to day action is.  Learn of impromptu trail days, ask “fix-it” questions of others (I’m serious – ever seen a LR with a problem on the trail?  You have never seen so many guys with tools surround it!  Same with the web site.)

3.                   Sign-up for the main rallies, we traditionally hold two a year:

a.       Spring Rally (in the Spring believe it or not) – usually a very “social” event, and great for first timers, but there are some who will go off to do the hard-core trails.

b.       MAR – Mid Atlantic Rally - the largest Land Rover event in North America held by a single club (more on this below).

4.                   Come to some of the evening social events, or even a garage workshop event – check the Forum for these.

In conclusion, let me say a few words about MAR.  This is the club’s premier event; hosted by the Adamson family in Buckingham County, Virginia at Pearl’s Pond in October; and I have it on good authority, that as the last two years have been so drenching, we are overdue a good dry one.  I look forward to meeting you all during the course of the year – I am the English guy flying the British Flag – so very easy to spot.

Best regards,
