Nuts and Bolts Rally
Mountain Lake- Giles County, VA
Opens: 2pm 07/31/09 – Closes: 4pm 08/2/09
mark your calendars, July 31-August 2. Mountain Lake, Giles County Virginia. Trail rides will include the Wheatland Farm, Potts Mountain trail and miles of open forest service roads. Rally Control will open on Friday afternoon, and the event will wrap up Sunday afternoon. Registration is limited to 125 vehicles.
-The open Forest Service Roads are stock friendly with views of the area.
-the trails on Wheatland Farm are intermediate with some sections that are more challenging.
-The Potts Mountain Trail is the most difficult. When it is dry it is moderately challenging with some great obstacles, and when it is wet it is QUITE challenging.
There will be guided rides as well as open riding in all locations, with some night rides as well.
Preregistration closes on Monday July 27th. If there is still space available you may register on site. There is a $20 late registration fee.
The camping is at the top of the mountain, where the old golf course was. Primitive campsites like last year and smaller campers are welcome as well. Bigger campers may have a hard time getting to the site. The Hotel is open as well, and the lake is filling up! above ground campfires are okay. Other questions will be taken care of in the FAQ thread as they come up.
In addition to mailing the registration you can Email it to me at ukoffroad @ yahoo.com and use Paypal to make the payment. Paypal is treasurer @ roav.org
There are currently 19 trucks registered for the event

you have everything from Forest Roads, easy for anyone, up to moderate stuff at the farm, and Potts Mountain has the hardest sections. More this weekend, need to get the last details cleared up.

Here are a few pics and a Google Earth shot of the camping area.
You can see the view (and West Virginia) from behind the old building.

Yippee! I am looking forward to this! It will be great to see everyone again. This year has been quite a load and an opportunity to relax is in order.

"Sounds good. Is there an additional charge for a second Land Rover? We all don't fit in the Series."

Chuck: Is there a possibility to post the vehicle minimums for the Potts trail?
Do you need a winch?
Is it for lifted vehicles at a minimum?
Will it ONLY be guided?
Cheers!

another truck in the same family is an additional $20.
To answer the other question, Potts is open to the public, on public land. You do not need a guide, we are simply providing one for those that have never been. It can be sone in a stock truck with some careful driving and experience. Small lift makes life easier, but not necessary.

Some pics from today's site preparation
Upper golf course
Abandoned clubhouse freshly manicured lawn
Trail scouting in progress
Potts Mountain. I would not recommend for a stock vehicle with stock tyres 1 mile past the natural pond. Beyond that, at a minumum off road tyres, 31" or taller, secure recovery points front and back, a friend with a winch.

update-
We mowed the field for camping this weekend and ran the trails on Wheatland. these trails were tighter than I remembered, but Boggs cuts them to fit a Defender . It was raining off and on all day which made things slick.

Y'all need to adjust your steering stops! They were cut for and run by our Defender 110 numerous times.
However, I never had a chance to try the last section down through the rocky area where the outlet had not been cut.
Enjoy them, but keep them tight!

I promise we did no trimming. I was in Joe's truck this time, he did just a touch of rubbing.

Pets ok? I'm most likely to bring the LR3, my 4.5 year old Max and the Roverlab labrador, Francis.
