ROAV is looking for someone who is willing to help us continue the efforts here in Va. The club is a cooperating member of United Four Wheel Drive Association. In the past year we have attended meetings with the Forest Service, and attended clean up and work weekends in the George Washington National Forest.
We would like to see this ontinue, and we would like to see some write ups of the various traisl around the state. If you have a GPS and a way with words, we would love your input. Please contact me if you can contribute to the effort.

While I would be glad to represent ROAV in this, what support could we expect from the BOD?
Member list? Funding? Kind words?
As of now I am trying to coordinate between several groups including Trout Unlimited and The Shenandoah Valley 4 Wheelers. In other words I am trying to build a bridge. ROAV would be a nice addition to this.
If we are done improving the Pearls Pond property maybe some of these funds can be diverted to a more proactive cause.
That is unless you are happy driving off road twice a year. If that's the case continue with what you are doing.

Unless I am missing something, UFWDA's preference is to have us work through the "state" level association which, in VA would be VA4WD.
I'm a member of OCC (Off-Camber Crawlers), VA4WD and United and would be happy to represent anyone (ROAV included) when I am out there and/or would love to work with other ROAV members (I need to get/buy a ROAV T-Shirt at some point anyway).
I don't have a GPS though.
There is a trail cleanup organized by VA4WDA this coming weekend if anyone is up to it. I'll be there on Saturday. www.va4wda.org/calendar.htm (I just realized there is not much info on the web site, send me a PM if you want more details on the venue [not sure why that was not posted in the first place]).

good to know! It looks like we have a couple of folks interested in helping out. I have been playing phone tag with Walter, but maybe we can put a meeting together to get these gentlemen a plan.

I also expect to be there on Saturday. I will more then likely be with the Shenandoah Valley 4 Wheelers.
I believe we were going to try to get to the Kephart area but not sure. I'll have to leave the area at about 3:30 to take my wife to work.
Trout Unlimited is planning on a clean up sometime in May or June.
MonLand, who are you and what will you be driving? Hope to see you.
Chuck, sorry to have missed you. Next week I will be in the Dominican Republic from Wednesday evening until the following Wednesday.
I know you are going to NC but maybe we can talk before I leave.

Check my profile!
My name is Loic Fabro and will be driving.... hum... not decided yet, if weather is nice, the black soft top D90 (with winch), if not, a green Disco (stock, no winch) and will be with my wife and two toddlers.
I'll be with the OCC crowd (unless there are enough Rover drivers for me to stick around!
).

Walter, nice meeting you there! Nice disco by the way!
There was also a Rover driver that I did not get to greet/meet since they left as I was running after the kids. Anyway, that was a good day since the goals for the weekend were met on Saturday! Even got to use the winch to pull stuff up from the ditches.
My understanding is that the big stuff got hauled away (tires, rims, chairs, benches, truck beds, computers, etc.) and this coming weekend people will be walking up and down the trails to pick the remaining cans, bottles, plastic bags, etc.
It's amazing how much "stuff" you can collect along the VA trails and roads!
Anyway, the day concluded nicely with a dinner/grill over a fire on Kephart (I actually had never run that trail before, nice and easy stocker trail).

Hey, Walter I finally signed up! Chuck sorry I misses you at this!
My name is Dave Graham of Shenandoah Valley 4wheelers for those that I haven't had the pleasure to meet yet. I don't have the numbers from this clean-up yet but I will soon and I'll let you know.
Man, what a thread hijacking!

Loic it was good meeting you also.
In spite of the rather disappointing turn out a lot was accomplished. It always amazes me the amount of trash in the National Forest.
Dave, good to see you here.
Chuck, I will be in touch. I'm out of town again.

Since this topic has come up under another thread, is there any interest in someone from the club working on this? What you would do would be your choice, but if we have members wanting to work on this let us know and we will see what can be done. We did not join United last year due to a lack of funds until very late in the year, but that is another possibility as well.

I thought I would bring this back up for the new year ad the new board. the club has managed to rebuild the finances and I would support using some of that to towards this. If you feel you have the time or the motivation let one of the new board members know.
At some point this spring I would like to put together a Big Levels run that will do some trash pick up as well.

That would be great to get the club into this. I'm not sure the members have the commitment.
One thing, and I don't think a lot of clubs understand this, going on a club run and picking up some trash does not constitute a "trail clean-up".
A trail clean -up should be an organized event coordinated with the forest service and what ever other entities might be involved such as the DOT or the dump the trash is being taken to.
I will try to attend these when I can but as of now with my work schedule I am lucky if I'm home 2 weekends in a row.

Thanks to Rick, we chatted and he has offered to look into this. I will pass this forward to the Board and if anyone else is interested in helping or sharing ideas let Rick know.
