Tracey and I went for an extended weekend to Kingsport, Tn to visit my dad and for 2 nights camping at the Putney Trailhead of Black Mountain Off Road Park in Harlan County, KY.
I have to say that the "Putney Trailhead" camp site was amazing and they have something for all levels of "campers". From Gatlinburg inspired cabins with full amenities for rent, RV hookups, or tent camping. All RV and tent sites include access to a bathroom/shower house that is seriously the nicest I've ever seen! This has 6 individual shower equipped bathrooms and a laundry facility and another 2 room house that is wheelchair friendly.
Also to accomodate the off road enthusiasts they have a pressure washer, air compressor, welder, torch, and tools for guests to use incase they need a repair. In addition to all of this, the Putney site directly borders the park so NO road travel is needed to access the trails!
The Black Mountain park was equally impressive with extremely well marked, color coded, and named trails to show their degree of difficulty (from stock trucks to full rock crawler buggies only) and the direction of the nearest trail head. They were also frequently numbered on the trails to ensure that you cant get lost and very well maintained. The county maintains the park itself and at $30 for a 1 year pass or $20 for a 30 day pass it was a great deal.
Thanks goes to Chris Starnes for bringing this to our attention and best of luck to him and his wife in their new practice. I wish they could have been there with us.
I would hope that ROAV would consider this as a possible location for a rally! Maybe even for the fall event this year! Granted, that it's a little far for the DC Crews and the Richmond Crews but I think that it is certainly worthy of consideraton dispite the drive since its 20 minutes from the VA border at Pennington Gap.
Here are the websites and pics will soon follow!
